So last night was the peak of the Perseids and I did the thing I do every August where I tell myself I'll just step outside for twenty minutes and then end up lying on a damp lawn chair until almost 2am with a thermos of coffee going cold next to me. Worth it, mostly. Not as worth it as some years, though, because the moon was doing that annoying waning-gibbous thing where it's bright enough to wash out half the sky. You'd catch a good bright one every few minutes and then just... nothing, for a stretch that felt way longer than it probably was.
I moved out to the far corner of the yard specifically to get away from Dave-next-door's motion-sensor floodlight, which is quite possibly the single worst piece of consumer electronics currently installed within fifty feet of my property. It's supposed to trip when something walks past it. It trips when a moth walks past it. I've asked him twice to angle it down and both times he's said "yeah I'll get to it" in the tone of someone who is never, ever going to get to it.
Anyway. I had my phone out running one of those sky-map apps, the kind where you hold it up and it overlays constellation names on whatever you're pointing at, and it's honestly still a little magic to me even though I've had a version of this app for years now. Point it at a smear of stars, app tells you that's Cassiopeia, feels like cheating in the best way. I don't remember exactly which app I was using last night, I've cycled through three or four of them since getting my phone, and they're all more or less the same experience with different icon sets.
The actual counting: I got maybe 25 meteors in the roughly ninety minutes I was seriously watching, between about 12:30 and 2am, which for Perseids is on the low side of what you'd hope for under dark skies. Under truly dark skies with no moon you can supposedly get 60-100 an hour at peak. I was not under truly dark skies. I was under suburban skies with a floodlight problem and a bright moon, so 25 in ninety minutes felt like a genuine win. There was one that left a visible trail for a good second and a half that made both me and my neighbor (the actual sky, not Dave) go "whoa" out loud to nobody.
I keep meaning to actually try astrophotography for this instead of just watching, and every year I don't do it, and every year I tell myself next year. The barrier isn't really the camera at this point, I've got a DSLR that could handle it fine if I bothered to learn manual exposure settings properly. The barrier is that setting up a tripod, doing test shots, and fiddling with ISO in the dark is a completely different activity than lying in a chair with coffee, and when it's midnight and I'm tired, lying in the chair always wins.
Small tech tangent while I'm here: I finally did the Windows 10 upgrade on the desktop a couple weeks back and I'm still going back and forth on it. Start menu's better than 8's version, no argument there, that was a low bar to clear honestly. But I've had two separate afternoons where an app I use constantly just froze on launch for no reason I could find, and the fix both times was some combination of restarting and waiting that felt less like troubleshooting and more like appeasing it. Not a dealbreaker. Just not the smooth thing I was hoping for after all the buildup.
If you missed last night, the Perseids technically run through the 24th, just at lower rates the further you get from peak, so there's still a decent window if you want to try. Find the darkest spot you've got access to, give your eyes a solid twenty minutes to adjust before you judge anything, and don't bother looking through binoculars or a telescope, wide naked-eye view is actually the right tool here since you're trying to catch fast streaks across a big chunk of sky rather than look at one fixed point. Bring a blanket. Bring coffee. Skip the phone screen once you're actually out there, it'll wreck your night vision faster than you'd think.
