IBM's Not Having It: The Quantum Supremacy Fight

So this week gave us the most satisfying corporate spat I've seen in a while, and it's over something almost nobody can actually explain to a normal person: quantum computing.

Quick version for anyone who missed it. Google has a paper coming out in Nature (it landed today, October 23rd) claiming their Sycamore processor did a calculation in 200 seconds that would take the world's best supercomputer roughly 10,000 years. This is the thing researchers call "quantum supremacy" — the point where a quantum computer does something a classical one practically can't. It leaked early, back in September, via a draft that got posted to NASA's site and then yanked, so by the time the official version showed up everyone had already had a month to argue about it.

And IBM was not going to just let that 10,000-years number sit there unchallenged. A couple days before Google's paper went live, IBM published a blog post basically saying: hang on, we ran the numbers, and our Summit supercomputer (currently the fastest machine on earth, built by IBM, not a coincidence) could do the same simulation in two and a half days, not ten thousand years. Not instantly, sure. But two and a half days is not "impossible," which was kind of the whole point of Google calling this supremacy in the first place.

I don't have a dog in this fight technically. I could not derive a single equation involved here if you put a gun to my head. What I love is the pettiness of it. IBM's post reads very calm and very academic on the surface, full of careful hedges about "classical simulation strategies," but underneath it is 100% a company saying "actually, no, you don't get to have this headline." They didn't dispute that Google's chip worked. They disputed the marketing. That's the tell. Nobody writes a rebuttal blog post that fast unless the framing stung.

And honestly? Good. I'm tired of every big tech claim landing as an uncontested press release that gets repeated verbatim by outlets that don't have anyone on staff who understands the underlying physics. IBM has actual quantum hardware of their own, actual skin in this game, and actual reasons to push back that aren't just sour grapes. Whether the real number is 10,000 years or 2.5 days doesn't change that both of these are genuinely wild computers doing genuinely wild things. But precision matters, and "impossible" is a much bigger claim than "impractical," and somebody should be allowed to say so in public without it being read as anti-progress grumbling.

(Semi-related aside: the same week Google was having its quantum moment, WeWork's board was busy finalizing that SoftBank bailout, the one where Adam Neumann reportedly walks away with something like $1.7 billion in buyouts and consulting fees on his way out the door of a company that was, weeks ago, supposedly worth $47 billion and is now scraping to avoid missing payroll. I bring this up not because it's related to qubits in any way, but because it's a useful reminder that "genius" and "founder" get thrown around in tech coverage way too loosely, and sometimes the actual genius move is just negotiating your own exit contract really well.)

Back to the quantum stuff for a second. What I keep coming back to is that "supremacy" was maybe a bad word choice from the start. It sounds like a finish line. It's not — it's one specific, deliberately chosen calculation with basically zero practical use, run on a machine that still needs a room full of equipment to keep 53 qubits cold enough to behave. Nobody's breaking encryption with this thing next week. I remember writing something skeptical about D-Wave's "quantum" claims years ago on here and getting an email from someone insisting I didn't understand the physics, which, fair, I didn't. I still don't. But I've noticed that every few years a company says "quantum breakthrough" and every few years the actual applications stay stubbornly theoretical, and I think it's fine to hold both of those thoughts at once: this is real and impressive, and also, calm down, nobody's simulating a new drug molecule with it by Christmas.

Anyway. Watching two of the biggest computing companies on the planet argue about the definition of the word "impossible" in dueling blog posts is, weirdly, the most fun I've had reading tech news in a month.
